What’s happening to me?

The expression “pain threshold” constitutes a phonetic discovery of the first order. Sounds really good. Better, perhaps, with the article in front: “The threshold of pain.” I heard it for the first time years ago, in the office of a gynecologist who taught painless childbirth classes that I attended with my pregnant wife. Our doctor used this phrase a lot to make us see that pain could not be objectified, but that each person suffered it in their own way.
