Mahomes works the miracle and wins his third Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 22-25 in an epic Super Bowl that was decided in overtime and crowned Patrick Mahomes with his third championship ring and a privileged position in the NFL Olympus. The quarterback was awarded the MVP of the final, another milestone in an already legendary career that aspires to chase Tom Brady’s 7 titles.

San Francisco started the game’s opening drive wisely, establishing the ground game with Christian McCaffrey who managed to penetrate the rival defensive line well, but immediately afterwards the running back made an unusual mistake and let the ball escape after Chenal’s tackle. George Karlaftis, the smartest in the class, recovered the fumble for Kansas in the first big defensive action of the game.

The Chiefs, nervous

Not even three minutes had passed that the two teams had demonstrated their strengths. After this frenetic start, the defensive units began to appear and both teams signed ‘3 and out’. When Andy Reid’s men got their first down of the game from Isiah Pacheco, the 49ers defense imposed its law: Chase Young with a sack and Warner with a tackle for loss They once again forced Chiefs to clear the ball.

Mahomes’ gear was not working and they were forced to move the board. The passage of time showed the problems of the Kansas front seven in stopping San Francisco’s run, whose offensive line gave Purdy time to connect two magnificent throws – one outside the numbers and another in the intermediate zone to Ayiuk – that served for Moody to put the first points on the scoreboard. The kicker’s 55-yard kick – the longest ever seen in a Super Bowl – made it 3-0 in the first moments of the second quarter.

The first touchdown arrives

Now Mahomes put on the hero’s cape and sent a remote-controlled pass of more than 40 yards to Mecole Hardman at the gates of the enzonde, but the errors returned to the scene. Pacheco, another ‘life insurance’ for Missourians throughout the course, lost possession after Lenoir’s ‘swipe’ and signed the second fumble of the night. Frustration and nervousness had taken over Kansas in the early stages of the game, a team that was playing in its fourth Super Bowl in five years. Less than ten minutes until the locker room and it was the Santa Clara team who took the reins and took advantage of the rival’s failures to disconnect.

A foul by LaJarius Sneed for indiscipline gave the first down to Shanahan, a coach who shook his hat and devised the perfect play: Purdy threw the lateral pass to Jawann Jennings and he sent it back to McCaffrey, who turned on the bike, took advantage of the blocks and planted himself in the end zone. First touchdown and 10-0 for San Francisco. Kansas, which did not want to leave empty-handed at halftime, got its act together after the ‘two minute warning’ and touched the red zone with what had been its best offensive drive so far.but had to settle for the field goal of the always reliable Harrison Bucker to make it 10-3. No sign of Travis Kelce in Reid’s attack. Players to the locker rooms and everything still to be decided.

Mahomes becomes human

The start of the third quarter became a nightmare for Mahomes in a matter of seconds. On a 3&12 play, the quarterback stepped forward in the pocket looking for Kelce but dropped the pass directly into Brown’s hands.49ers cornerback who made the first interception of the game.

The Chiefs rearguard managed to keep the team in the game and that was key for Patrick Mahomes to wake up and make two excellent plays with his legs in trademark scramble situations. He could not convert a surreal third down that was not repeated despite the emergence of two spontaneous ones on the grass, but Butker sharpened his aim and once again placed the ball between the sticks with a 57-yard shot, which for the second time in the game surpassed the historical brand. 10-6 and Kansas was approaching.

When defenses seemed to prevail on third downs, McCloud made an unforgivable mistake when receiving the punt by touching the ball and let the Chiefs recover it a few meters from the end zone. Mahomes did not forgive and activated his killer instinct with a dart to Valdez-Scantling for the touchdown that put his team ahead on the scoreboard.r (10-13).

There was only the last quarter left to play and Kyle Shanahan had to show that he could rise to the moment and find an answer to Spagnuolo’s defensive structure.. The 49ers coach dared to play a fourth down and found gold with Jennings’ immediate touchdown to make it 16-13 who regained the lead for his team.

Moody missed the additional free throw and that gave life to Andy Reid’s team, who through the hands of Kelce and the claw of Pacheco signed an offensive series that was just one ‘deflection’ by the Niners away from becoming a touchdown. Butker jumped back onto the field and added the field goa againl (16-16.) Game tied with five minutes remaining.

Things were about kickers. San Francisco did not convert a key third down and Jake Moody again added the three points to put his team aheada (19-16) with 1:53 left, but Butker responded in kind, tying it (19-19) and taking the game to overtime, the second time this happened in the history of the Super Bowl. The nerves were on edge.

The final outcome

Overtime began with an ‘almost’ interception by Purdy and a holding by McDuffie that gave life to San Francisco’s initial offensive drive, which ended up going for the three points. 22 – 19 and ball now for the Chiefs, a possession that was everything.

If there was someone who could work a miracle, it was Kansas’ number 15. Mahomes starred in a historic final drive that culminated with a touchdown pass to McKinnon to end the game. Third championship ring for the now legendary Chiefs quarterback who goes on forever.
