A landslide in a gold mine in the Turkish province of Erzincan has buried an as yet undetermined number of miners and threatens to cause a ecological disaster due to the probable release of toxic substances flowing into the Euphrates River, Turkish press reports.
The collapse occurred around 2:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. in Spanish peninsular time) in an open pit mine near the Bagistas reservoir, about 90 kilometers from the city of Erzincan, in eastern Turkey.
“There are buried mine workers“, the governor of the province, Hamza Aydogdu, confirmed to the NTV network, but without specifying how many, while some Turkish media speak of seven trapped workers.
